Drum roaster in the front window — you can watch your beans turn.
We started with one
secondhand roaster.
In 2014 we bought a tired drum roaster off a farmer in Dullstroom, drove it home on a bakkie with no shocks, and spent a winter learning what we'd got ourselves into. The first eleven batches were, by any fair measure, terrible.
The twelfth was not. That one we still roast — it's the Bakenkop House, and it's the reason there is a queue on Saturdays.
Everything here is small on purpose. We buy in single sacks, roast to order twice a week, and if a lot doesn't taste right it doesn't go in the grinder. That's the whole business plan.
